Description:

The internship is intended for Master’s degree students in Transportation Systems Engineering (or closely related fields) who are interested in transportation planning and design, user behaviour modelling, traffic management and control, and freight and logistics.

The selected intern will be involved in research and applied activities related to:

  • Transportation planning and design (static simulation; large-scale applications)
    Users’ behaviour modelling (e.g. mode choice);
  • Traffic flow modelling and simulation (dynamic simulation; sub-network and junction/link level);
  • Logistics system analysis and simulation, with particular attention to port and maritime logistics;
  • Assessment of Environmental and Energy Impacts of Transportation Systems.

Tasks may include scenario simulation (through commercial software or through the implementation of hand-written code/MATLAB, Python or similar programming environments), models’ calibration and validation, performance and impact evaluation.

The internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in transportation systems (in particular with regard to road infrastructures- urban and non-urban and port logistics) within an academic research environment.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate should meet the following requirements:

  • Enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Transportation Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Managementor a related field.

Background in one of the following topics:

  • Transportation planning,
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Freight and Logistics (preferably with exposure to port or intermodal freight transport)
  • Traffic flow theory, Traffic Assignment
  • Optimisation (possibly)

The following skills/competencies will be positively evaluated.

  • Advanced use of basic tools (such as Excel)
  • Data analysis
  • Familiarity with commercial software (static/dynamic tools: Transcad/PTV VISUM-VISSIM; Biogeme..)
  • Programming skills (es, MATLAB, Python or similar environments)
  • Good knowledge of English, with a minimum level of B2 (CEFR), as required by our master’s degree.
